Motor oil deteriorates from the heat caused by friction when the engine parts grind together during normal operation. Another effect of friction is that tiny slivers of metal are eroded into the oil. Together with dust from the environment, the heated deteriorating oil thickens and darkens over the course of several weeks and gradually begins to lose its lubricating qualities.
When routine oil changes are neglected, sludge builds up in the nooks and crannies of the car engine.
Here's a look at a filter full of metal shavings and debris.
The cost of an oil change, including the time you'll spend waiting for it, is microscopic when compared to the cost of replacing your car's entire engine.
Give us a call, or just come by. When we change the oil in your car, we take the opportunity to poke around the engine and make sure that everything else is in good shape, too -- we'll let you know if we find worn or cracked belts, if your tires are wearing unevenly, and anything else we see that isn't in tip top condition.
